Overview

American Airlines is the world's largest airline by fleet size and passengers carried. With major hubs in Dallas, Miami, Charlotte, Chicago, and Philadelphia, AA covers virtually every domestic US market. The airline has the strongest Latin American and Caribbean network of any US carrier. However, American has lagged behind Delta and United in premium product investment, and its AAdvantage program has seen significant devaluations in recent years.

Cabin classes

Economy class

Economy offers 30-31 inch pitch — standard for US carriers. Main Cabin Extra provides 3-6 extra inches for a fee. Complimentary snacks and drinks on domestic flights. International economy includes meal service. No seatback screens on most domestic narrowbodies — entertainment via personal device.

Business class

Flagship Suite on 787s and some 777s features a 1-2-1 layout with closing doors and fully flat beds — a recent improvement. However, many 777s still have the old Zodiac reverse herringbone without doors. The Flagship Lounges at JFK, Miami, and Dallas offer premium dining.

First class

No traditional international first class. Flagship First transcontinental (JFK-LAX/SFO) offers a premium recliner with enhanced service. The real first class experience is in the Flagship First Dining facility at select airports.

Baggage policy

Basic Economy: personal item only. Main Cabin: 1 carry-on + 1 personal item, checked bags from $35. Business/First: 2-3 checked bags free. AAdvantage elite members get free checked bags.

In-flight entertainment

Personal device entertainment on most domestic flights (no seatback screens on 737s and A321s). Seatback screens on widebody international flights. Wi-Fi available on all flights (paid). Content selection is reasonable.

Food & catering

Domestic economy: free snacks and drinks, buy-on-board on longer flights. International economy: complimentary meals. Flagship Suite: multi-course dining. Quality is inconsistent — some routes are better than others. Flagship Lounges and Flagship First Dining are highlights.

On-time performance & safety

American Airlines has an on-time performance rate of approximately 76-78%. The airline's massive operation across multiple hubs — including congestion at Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW), Miami (MIA), and Chicago O'Hare (ORD) — makes operational consistency a challenge. American holds a 7/7 safety rating. The fleet of approximately 900 mainline aircraft has an average age of around 12 years, with Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, 737 MAX, and Airbus A321XLR aircraft joining the fleet as part of ongoing renewal.

Route network & connectivity

American Airlines is the world's largest airline by fleet size, operating from primary hubs at Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW), Miami (MIA), Charlotte (CLT), Chicago O'Hare (ORD), Philadelphia (PHL), Phoenix (PHX), Washington Reagan (DCA), and Los Angeles (LAX). As a founding member of the Oneworld alliance, American partners with British Airways, Iberia, Japan Airlines, Qantas, Cathay Pacific, and Qatar Airways. The airline is particularly strong on routes to Latin America and the Caribbean (through its Miami hub), transatlantic routes (through Philadelphia and Charlotte), and domestic coverage that reaches virtually every US city. American serves over 350 destinations in approximately 60 countries, and its regional operation (American Eagle/Envoy) extends coverage to hundreds of smaller markets.

Booking tips & how to save

American Airlines fares are generally competitive, though the airline has implemented a tiered fare structure (Basic Economy, Main Cabin, Main Cabin Extra, Premium Economy, Business, First) that can make comparison shopping complex. AAdvantage miles are earned through Citi credit card partnerships and can be valuable for Oneworld award bookings — partner awards on airlines like Qatar Airways, Japan Airlines, and Cathay Pacific offer some of the best redemption values. Web specials released on American's website typically offer the best direct-booking prices. For domestic flights, book 3-5 weeks ahead for the best fares. American's Flagship Business class on A321T aircraft (JFK transcontinental routes) and 777-300ER (international) offers a competitive lie-flat product. Consider booking through AA.com for easy access to AAdvantage benefits and same-day flight changes.

Loyalty program — AAdvantage

AAdvantage is revenue-based. Tiers: Gold (free upgrades, priority boarding, checked bags), Platinum (better upgrades, Oneworld Sapphire), Platinum Pro (Oneworld Emerald, lounge access), Executive Platinum (systemwide upgrades, concierge service). Loyalty Points replaced traditional qualifying miles. The program has faced criticism for frequent devaluations.

Our verdict

Fly American Airlines if: Travelers who need maximum route options, particularly to Latin America and the Caribbean, where AA has the strongest network of any US carrier.

Consider alternatives if: Those who value premium economy or consistent quality — AA's product is often the weakest among the big three US carriers.
